BMW E39 M5

The E39 M5. 5 Litre V8, 398 bhp, 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Supercar performance in a saloon.

Unlike the previous generations of M5 ‘s, the E39 was the first not to feature the inline 6 cylinder engine of it’s predecessors but a 4.9 litre V8. It was also the first to be built alongside other 5 series cars at the Dingolfing factory in germany rather than at the BMW M GmbH factory.

At the time of its release in 1999, the E39 M5 was the quickest 4 door saloon car in the world. With power up to 400 bhp this fairly large chunk of German metal could propel you and your family to 60mph in around 5 seconds. But it’s not just the fact that it’s quick that make it a great car, its also great in the twisty bits, as all M cars are.

Now it’s a couple of generations old, it’s become a staggeringly quick car that can be bought for less than you might think. Be careful though, it’s still an M car, and that means it won’t exactly be cheap to run!
